Kikatv – Family IPTV in 4K - Something for Every Age

IPTV Glossary for Families: 28 Terms in Plain English

A glossary of IPTV terms beside a TV showing a channel guide and a kids group

Most IPTV jargon is a simple family idea wearing an acronym. An M3U is a playlist link, the EPG is the TV guide your kids scroll, and a connection is one screen playing at once. Get those three and almost every setup page and support reply suddenly makes sense. Below are the 28 terms a household meets most, grouped by the order you actually run into them, not alphabetically.

If you only learn three

Xtream Codes login is the server address, username and password that let a player in. Connection is one screen watching at a time, which your plan caps. EPG is the on-screen guide. Those three carry a family through setup; the rest earns its keep when something acts up.

Signing up and setting up

Xtream Codes. Once the name of a server panel, now the shorthand for a three-part login: server address, username, password. A player that takes it pulls live channels, movies, series and the guide together in a single step, which is why it beats a playlist in most apps. Kikatv hands this format out by default.

M3U playlist. A plain list of streams, each with a name and an address, delivered as one long web link with your username and password baked in. Apps like VLC load it directly. Guard the link the way you would a password, since anyone holding it holds the account.

Server address. The provider host your player connects to, sometimes labeled host. It usually opens with http:// and ends in a colon and a port number such as :8080. Leave off either piece and the login is refused, which is the most common first-night slip.

Portal URL. The address a MAG-style box uses instead of a username and password. You enter it in the box portal screen, and the provider clears your box on its side.

MAC address. A device fingerprint written as six pairs of characters split by colons; on a MAG it opens with 00:1A:79. Boxes and apps such as Smart IPTV and IBO Player use it to pin a subscription to one device, so swapping the device means handing the provider the new address.

Sideloading and APK. Installing an app from a file rather than the device store. On a Fire TV stick running Fire OS this is how TiviMate arrives, through the Downloader app after you allow unknown sources. Always take the file from the developer site, never a link in a comment.

Player app. The software that does the watching: TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, Smart IPTV, IBO Player. It holds no channels and shows nothing until a subscription is typed in, and one account can run a different player on every screen.

Set-top box. A dedicated TV device like a MAG or Formuler, built around live viewing. MAG boxes sign in by portal and MAC; Formuler runs its own app and Android players too. They cost more than a stick but bring a remote made for channel surfing, which suits older hands.

Your account, in plain words

Connection. One stream playing at a moment, also called a screen. The login can sit on every device you own; this number decides how many watch together. Kikatv plans come with 1, 2, 3 or 5, which is really a question of how many rooms run at once.

Line. Trade slang for a single subscription: one set of credentials with its own screen limit and end date. A trial line is a short test account.

Expiry date. The day your paid term runs out, shown in most players account screen. When it lapses, every device goes dark at the same instant, which looks like an outage but is not; check it first when the whole house loses the channels together.

Panel. The web dashboard a provider uses to create lines, set screen limits and set end dates. Subscribers never see it, and it is why a new account activates in minutes rather than days.

Reseller. A business selling another provider service under its own name, buying credits from that provider panel. You lean on two companies at once, and if the upstream source drops the reseller, every account it sold stops together.

Finding something for everyone

EPG. The electronic program guide, the grid of what is on now, next and across the week. The player builds it from schedule data sent with the streams, and a full, current guide is a fair sign someone is looking after the service.

EPG URL. A separate address for that guide data, usually an XMLTV file. An Xtream login brings the guide in by itself; an M3U setup often needs this pasted in by hand.

Channel groups. The folders that sort a lineup, normally by country then by type such as news, sport or kids. With 25,000+ channels, hiding the groups nobody opens and keeping a kids group near the top is what makes the remote usable for a family.

VOD. Video on demand, the movies and series you choose rather than tune into, shown as its own sections beside live TV. The Kikatv library runs to 120,000+ titles through the same login.

Catch-up. Programs that already aired, held in a short server archive for a set number of days, on the channels a provider records. Handy for the show that ran while dinner overran. The related word timeshift means pausing or rewinding a live channel you are on.

Why the picture differs room to room

Bitrate. How much data each second of video is given, in megabits per second. More of it means more detail, most visible in fast sport. As a rule of thumb a 4K feed wants about 25 Mbps steady, an HD feed about 10.

Resolution tags. The size labels in channel names: SD, HD for 720p, FHD for 1080p, 4K or UHD for 2160p. The same channel listed several times is simply several versions; pick the highest your screen and line can hold.

HEVC and H.264. The two common compression methods. H.264 plays nearly everywhere; HEVC, also called H.265, reaches the same quality at a lower bitrate and is usual on 4K. An older TV without HEVC in hardware may stutter or show black, in which case choose the HD version.

Frame rate. Images per second, typically 25 or 30 for normal shows and 50 or 60 for sport, where the higher figure smooths fast motion. If action looks jerky on one set, a frame-rate matching option in its display menu often helps.

Decoder. The part of a player that turns compressed video into a picture. Hardware decoding uses the video chip and is faster; software decoding uses the main processor and handles odd formats. Flipping this is a first fix when one channel goes black.

When something misbehaves

Buffering. The pause, usually a spinning circle, while the player waits for more video. One channel doing it points at that feed; every channel doing it points at your connection or Wi-Fi.

Buffer size. A setting in some players, TiviMate included, for how much video loads ahead before play starts. A bigger buffer rides out brief dips but slows channel changes; nudging it up one step is worth a try against repeated stutters.

Latency. How far behind real time a stream sits, usually a few seconds to half a minute, which is why a neighbor cheer can beat your screen to a goal. Some delay is normal and cannot be erased.

Anti-freeze. A marketing phrase, not a real technology. At best it means a provider with enough server capacity to stay up when everyone is watching. Judge it by testing at peak, never by the badge.

OTT. Short for over the top, meaning video sent over the open internet to an app rather than down an operator private line. Streaming apps are OTT, and so, strictly, is subscription IPTV. Our IPTV versus OTT guide unpacks the difference.

Nothing here needs memorizing before you buy. The Xtream login you receive, the screen count on your plan and the guide that fills in once a player loads will carry the whole family through. The quickest way to make the rest concrete is to see it live: the 24-hour trial puts every term above on screen, and WhatsApp support answers if a setup field asks for something this page has not named.

More questions parents send us

Should the family use an M3U link or an Xtream Codes login?

Use the Xtream Codes login wherever the player takes it. It pulls live channels, movies, series and the guide in one step and is easier to type on a remote. Keep the M3U link for apps that only accept playlists, such as VLC, or for Smart IPTV, which loads a playlist against the TV MAC address.

What does 2 connections mean on a plan?

Two screens can play at the same moment on one account, say cartoons on a tablet while a game is on the living-room TV. The login can go on more devices than that; only how many play at once is capped. A third screen that starts is refused until one of the first two stops. Kikatv offers 1, 2, 3 or 5.

Why does an app ask for a MAC address?

Some apps and boxes, including Smart IPTV, IBO Player and MAG, identify a device by its MAC address rather than a username and password. The playlist or portal is tied to that address. Reset the TV or change the device and the address can change, so the link has to be made again.

What is the difference between catch-up and VOD?

VOD is a standing library of movies and full seasons you can browse any time. Catch-up is a short archive of programs that already aired on particular live channels, usually kept for a set number of days, so it rescues yesterday match or bulletin. VOD is films and box sets; catch-up is only on channels that record.

Is HEVC better than H.264 for a family TV?

HEVC squeezes video more efficiently, giving the same quality at a lower bitrate, which is why 4K channels use it. The catch is support: older sets and cheap boxes may not decode HEVC in hardware and can stutter or go black. If that happens, pick the FHD or HD version, which is more likely to use H.264.

Should we buy IPTV from a reseller?

A reseller can be fine, but you rely on two businesses: the reseller for support and the upstream provider for the streams. If the upstream drops them, accounts stop without warning. Before paying anyone, look for published prices, a written refund policy, a named support channel and a trial you can run at peak.
